“TAKE TIME TO LOOK”

— GEORGIA O’KEEFFE

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum has served as a cultural institution in New Mexico since its inception in 1997, with the sole mission of preserving the legacy and life’s work of one of history’s most prolific female artists. In the time since its founding, the Museum and its stewards have diligently carried the spirit of the artist into the present and have delivered her into the hands of a new generation — Inspiring young creative minds and dazzling a new wave of art lovers.

Maestas Design Studio has been fortunate to be able to work with this iconic institution that for decades has been a force in the world of art and design. As a New Mexico founded studio we opened ourselves to this collaboration with a focus on our shared love of this enchanting land, our admiration for such a prolific artist, and a commitment to creating simple yet eye catching designs. We are honored to share our inspired designs, in partnership with the museum, and offer them exclusively through their various site stores.

Pedernal / Adobe

Northern New Mexico is often referred to as a place of beauty and wonder, abundant in its diversely breathtaking terrain and iconic landmarks. One such landmark that is most notable is the majestic “Cerro Pedernal”, originally named “Tsip’in” by the indigenous Tewa people of this land. Since time immemorial the Pedernal has provided an important resource in the form of flint stone, for which it is named, that would be fashioned into tools by the indigenous peoples who have resided in the Rio Chama Valley for centuries. The Cerro Pedernal has since captivated the minds of creatives and artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, who would go on to paint this mountain 28 times over the span of her career.

Maestas Design Studio now follows suit by drawing inspiration from this wonder for the “Pedernal/Adobe” design, taking a minimalist approach and reducing this scene to its simplest shapes and colors to create a playful yet stylish graphic.

The Abiquiú Home and Studio

Georgia O’Keeffe found inspiration in many places over the span of her artistic career. Most notably, her love of the natural world is widely reflected in the impressive body of her prolific work. We, however, were captivated by her love of her iconic Abiquiú Home and Studio. Rooted in a fascination of the shapes and forms of the traditional adobe structure, she would go on to create several works inspired by the architectural elements of the historic home.

One element of the home that can be seen repeatedly in her work is the iconic “black door”. The artist herself was quoted as saying “That door is what made me buy this house. I used to climb over the wall, just to look at that door”. The numerous paintings of this particular feature have served as a wonderful example of her mastery over minimalism, shadow, light, and the use of negative space.

The inspired design, titled “Black Door (Corner/Sky), draws inspiration from O’Keeffe’s fascination with this element of her beloved Abiquiú Home and Studio and honors the creative spirit of those who can see beyond the ordinary.
